Abstract

This paper proposes an intelligent solution for flood mitigation through continuous environmental monitoring and timely emergency alerts. Floods are among the most destructive natural disasters, causing severe damage to human life, infrastructure, agriculture, and public services. The impacts of climate change, rapid urbanisation, and unpredictable weather patterns have led to a significant increase in the number and severity of flooding events, making reliable early warning systems crucial for disaster preparedness. The project employs Internet of Things (IoT) technology, wireless sensor networks, and real-time data analytics to continuously monitor critical environmental parameters, including water level, rainfall intensity, soil moisture, temperature, and humidity. The accumulated sensor data is transmitted to a central cloud-based server for processing, where it is analysed using pre-defined threshold values or machine learning techniques to detect possible flood risks. Upon detection of hazardous conditions, the system automatically triggers instant alerts. It disseminates notifications via SMS, mobile applications, email services and public warning systems, enabling authorities and residents to take immediate preventive action. The platform also offers real-time visualisation of environmental conditions via an interactive monitoring dashboard, facilitating informed decision-making during emergencies. The proposed system automates the flood detection and notification processes to improve disaster preparedness, response time, public safety and economic losses. The architecture is scalable, reliable, and cost-effective, making it deployable in urban, rural, and flood-prone areas worldwide.
